Japanese Temples & Hot Springs Abound

Awake in the “Land of the Rising Sun” with tours of Osaka & Nara that stop at top cultural landmarks, including Osaka Castle.

About Your Trip

Explore ancient and modern Japan as you journey through Osaka — and beyond — starting with a tour in nearby Nara Prefecture. Its lovely landscape includes 78 buildings that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site known as Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara. You’ll visit 2 of them: Todai-ji temple and Kasugataisha shrine. If lucky, you may encounter tame deer that roam freely through the lush terrain.

Back in the city, visit the famed Osaka Castle. Surrounded by cherry trees, gardens, moats and stone walls, Osaka Castle comprises 13 ancient structures that are considered Important Cultural Properties by the government, including Otemon Gate, Sengan Turret and a gun powder storehouse. Enjoy a samurai-sword performance before heading to the observation deck at Abeno Harukas. At 985 feet (300 meters) high, it boasts floor-to-ceiling windows for spectacular 360-degree views.

For a change of pace, head to Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum on your second tour. There, you’ll learn all about this legendary Japanese alcoholic drink. Then it’s off to visit Arima Onsen, one of the oldest hot-springs towns in Japan. Upon your return to Osaka, you can enjoy your leisure time and further delve into the city on your own.

What we love:
• Todai-ji is home to a massive bronze statue of Vairocana Buddha that stands at a height of 49 feet (15 meters).
• Besides being a place to socialize, hot-springs baths claim to offer various health benefits, including improved circulation, pain relief and mental relaxation.
• A popular purchase by tourists visiting Japan is an omiyage, typically a special boxed food item; different from a souvenir, the omiyage is given as a gift rather than kept as a memento.
• Namba Station, one of Osaka’s major railway stations, is within walking distance of the Hotel Monterey Grasmere Osaka.
• To maximize your enjoyment, download the DreamTrips™ app to access DreamTrips Local — then earn points on dining, entertainment, spa experiences & more at select spots recommended by DreamTrippers just like you!

Destination

Situated in the Kansai region, Osaka is the second-smallest prefecture in Japan, but it boasts the country’s third-largest population. Surrounded by the Tokyo mountains and Osaka Bay, its natural scenery and unique culture are key ingredients to the city’s economic success. Popular attractions include Osaka Castle, numerous temples and shrines, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka. Historically a merchant city, Osaka earned its name as the “nation’s kitchen” for serving as a rice-trading center during the Edo period. Its world-famous cuisine includes takoyaki (fried octopus), udon (noodle dish), traditional oshizushi (pressed sushi) and more. The city is also known for its fine sake, made with freshwater from the prefecture’s mountains. Osaka is home to more than 35,000 wholesale and resale shops, mostly located in Chuo and Kita, 2 of the city’s 24 wards.
