Discover Kyoto's Ancient & Modern Culture

Visit feudal-era castles, a 14th-century market, important shrines & other top sites in & around Kyoto during 3 fascinating tours — plus, stroll through a famous geisha district, soak in hot springs & see how rice wine is produced.

About Your Trip

Delve into Japan’s rich history and culture on an expansive journey that takes you from Kyoto to Himeji and back again — stopping in a famous hot-springs district along the way. Starting in Kyoto, you’ll experience both the serenity and the bustling energy of the city as you take in some of its wonderful attractions. Marvel at UNESCO-protected Kiyomizu-dera Temple, dating from the year 778 and built into the side of Mt. Otowa. You’ll continue to Fushimi Inari Taisha — a shrine dedicated to the god of rice — where you can walk under any of the 10,000 colorful gates. At a local restaurant, observe age-old traditions up close with a special meal accompanied by a maiko, a geisha-like apprentice. Then, after a stroll around Nishiki Market, it’s time for hands-on cultural immersion with the opportunity to don a kimono while learning about this elegant, traditional clothing. Don’t be shy — you can wear it as you walk around historic Higashiyama and Gion, an area acclaimed for its geishas.

Your second adventure brings you to the 400-year-old Nijo Castle — even though the main castle succumbed to fire, there’s plenty to see, including gardens, moats and fortification walls that surround the palace full of precious artwork. From there, you’ll visit the ancient Zen Buddhist temple Kinkakuji (“Golden Pavilion”) then stop to spend time in Arashiyama, home to a popular bamboo grove and photogenic bridge. That evening, you can take advantage of leisure time to revive your muscles in the soothing hot springs at your hotel near world-famous Arima Onsen, one of the oldest hot-springs towns in Japan.

But the fun doesn’t stop there! The following day, as you’re leaving Hyogo prefecture to return to Kyoto, you’ll have plenty more opportunities to get a glimpse into local history and customs. See early 17th-century Himeji castle complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site for its remarkably well-preserved sandstone buildings — all 83 of them! Below this hilltop wonder, you’ll visit a gorgeous Japanese-style garden, Kokoen. Your final stop is at Nadagiku Sake Brewing Company, producers of this fine rice wine since 1910.

What we love:
• Nijo Castle was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate that lasted from 1603-1867. It’s part of the larger UNESCO World Heritage site known as Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.
• Fushimi Inari Shrine was predominantly featured in the film “Memoirs of a Geisha.”
• Kyoto has its own variation of the geisha culture. The regional equivalent of a geisha is known as a geiko, while an apprentice is called a maiko.
• Besides being a place to socialize, hot springs claim to offer various health benefits, including improved circulation, pain relief and mental relaxation.
• To maximize your enjoyment, download the DreamTrips™ app to access DreamTrips Local — then earn points on dining, entertainment, spa experiences & more at select spots recommended by DreamTrippers just like you!

This trip will close by December 28.
